Introduction to Stained Glass

PGC 1 In this introductory class, you will learn the basics for working with flat colorful glass such as cutting, grinding, foiling, and soldering. You'll explore the famous Tiffany method of construction and work with provided patterns to create a finished stained glass panel ready for display. No experience necessary. This class is designed for beginners, and is a prerequisite for Intermediate Stained Glass.

 

Class tuition includes 2 hours of open-studio time to be used during the 8-week course period. Open Studio is held on Monday Nights 5:00pm - 9:00pm.

 

Multiweek classes do not meet the week of 3/1-3/7.

Intermediate Stained Glass

PGC 1 Choose from a variety of patterns and learn the traditional technique of lead came. This technique is necessary to create a window that will be exposed to outdoor elements. Understanding this technique will allow you to feel comfortable moving forward with larger, more permanent stained glass creations.

 

Prerequisite: Introduction to Stained Glass or 24 hours of stained glass experience with instructor experience is required.

 

Class does not meet on 3/1.

Fusing for Stained Glass

Bring a whole new dimension to your stained glass projects by learning to create your very own art glass. In this 2-day introductory workshop, you’ll explore the interplay and possibilities between kilnforming and stained glass. On day one, you’ll dive into the colorful world of kilnforming as you learn glass cutting and fusing fundamentals. Experiment with accessory glass like frit and stringers to design and build your own custom art glass sheet.

On day two, discover how to incorporate your one-of-a-kind fused creations into a stained glass suncatcher. You’ll learn how to cut, foil, and solder your fused glass into a finished piece that glows with your personal touch.

Perfect for beginners and experienced glass artists alike. This workshop is a creative fusion of color, technique, and imagination.

This workshop meets 10am-2pm on Saturday, and 1pm-5pm on Sunday.

Stained Glass Terrariums

Harness the structural power of glass and solder to create a three-dimensional planter box or terrarium to house your small to medium-sized house plants. You will learn stained glass techniques such as cutting glass, copper foiling, and soldering. We will also cover how to reinforce a 3D construction so it can hold the weight of your house plant and last for years. No experience necessary.

An 8-week curriculum, accelerated into just 4 weeks.

Enjoy all the fun of an 8-week course in half the time. Explore the Tiffany method of stained glass while creating your very own panel from a variety of provided patterns. Learn the basic skills of cutting and shaping sheet glass, foiling, and soldering to create a panel you will proudly display. No experience necessary.

 

You will experience the same number of contact hours as students attending the once-a-week, 8-week classes, but in a condensed, 4-week format.

Stained Glass Open Projects in the Fast Lane

An 8-week curriculum, accelerated into just 4 weeks.

After learning the basics of stained glass construction in the introductory or intermediate stained glass classes, we invite you to continue to develop your skills in Stained Glass Open Projects. This is a class for those who want to challenge themselves to explore the art of stained glass at their own skill level under the guidance of an instructor. Class projects will be limited to no larger than 16"x18" and students may be required to purchase some of their own materials if the studio glass selection does not meet their specific needs.

You will experience the same number of contact hours as students attending the once-a-week, 8-week classes, but in a condensed, 4-week format.

Class tuition includes 1 session of open-studio time per student to be used during the 4-week course period if needed to complete your project.

Prerequisite: Introduction to Stained Glass or 24 hours of stained glass experience with instructor permission is required.

Ages 14+

SiO2 Teen Boot Camp

Ages: 12 - 19

Spend an unforgettable and fun week this summer diving into the world of glass.This program is designed for teens in grades 6 - 9 to take over the Pittsburgh Glass Center studios. It gives students the rare hands-on opportunity to learn the many facets of glass in one of the top facilities in the country. Working with experienced instructors, students will rotate through all of the studios and explore glassblowing, flameworking, kilnforming, and coldworking. New this year, students will also connect glass and technology in the fabrication lab.

Required Forms

All registered students must complete our Teen Boot Camp Intake form. This form is presented during the registration process, and is required for all students prior to their first day of camp. Forms will ask for emergency contacts, known student allergies, and designated persons allowed to sign students out of camp.

Scholarships are available for all students! Scholarship Application Deadline: May 3, 2026.
